Dubai, UAE, is the town where everything is possible: luxury hotels, world highest skyscrapers, huge shopping malls, the Marina and the ski slope within walking distance.Thirty years ago, Dubai was a desert where no much oil was at disposal, so the ruler, Sheikh Maktoum, decided he would build a city to be a centre of tourism and financial services and for whose purpose there would need huge working force. Is the foreign underclass who built the city, and are trapped here. They are hidden in plain view. You see them everywhere, but you are trained not to look at them. The Sheikh built the city not the workers. Every evening, hundreds of thousands of young men, mostly from far east, are shuttled from their working sites to a wasteland an hour out of town, where they are quarantined away. Nothing is what it seems; it looks like a modern place – but beneath the surface it’s a medieval.
